Module 2- Art understanding begins

This week was jammed packed with information which builds a basses of understanding art. First is the video "Aestheics: Philosophy of Arts" talks about the beauty of art and how this concept of understanding art started. Beginning in the middle age they talk about its connection to god and how key figures such as " Plato, Francis Hutcheson Tolstoy and other came to effect this. There we're principals or laws establish; these laws talk about the way individuals can discuss and interrupt the art. The video goes on to describe how art is based on different types of beauty such as Nature as a natural form of beauty and how emotions are tied into all aspects of creating and observing beauty in art. This was during the time of the 18th century when aestheics came into the world, this era was a very peaceful and individuals developed a very romanticize view on earth and emphasis and it ability to show beauty.

The video talks about the genetic and brain involvement of art and how it develops and evolved over centuries. Brain development is an extreme part of art because of how we view it and comprehend it. The brain also analyzes and gaining the emotions that one feels. Without the brains comprehension of art there would be no way for us to relate and emotionally connect with art. The video also talks about aesthetics which is how the brain reacts to art. Lastly the video talks about the difference between our conscious or unconscious mind and how they process and analyzes things differently. So, something that happened while you were conscious you may have processed one way but when you fall asleep and think about it some more your brain will process it in a different way because your unconscious.

As for the article this goes on to talk about the brain and how it comes to preserve the different aspects of an art piece and how each intricate detail to the color, lines, shapes and different shades are used to play an important part in this. The article continues to talk about how our mind know what where looking at is two-dimensional but at glance we immediately know there is a representation of "familiar aspects of everyday life, such as people, animals, plants, foods or places". The ability of painters or artist are very impressive, take for instance a two-dimensional painting with the correct, shapes, colors, lines and shades can transform in our perspective this item to a 3D piece of art given you a deep sense of depth, emotion and life to a flat surface. The Mona Lisa is mentioned in the article with a few pieces from Van Gogh, but the Mona Lisa in particular has a level of perspective to her where if you look at her eyes and mouth they both give you a different look and feel of the painting one seeming as if she is smiling more. This is due the angles and shades used in the painting having our brain view it as almost a real person effected by the lights and shades around us.

This video talks about two important people of the 20th century, Wittgenstein and George Dickie. Wittgenstein created a new idea of language where if a word to be a thing it would have to consider the uses of that word. He also brought the use of language into art not only bringing about the beauty of it but adding in the regular world as well. George Dickie also created a new idea of art, with his help he created a whole new standard of art. Back then art was paintings, sculptors, and architecture were focused on as art but Dickie said " a work of art could be anything that the Institution of the art world declared as much." Which made a big impact in the art community, this is why we have things like modern art where anything now can be deemed as art.

Most interesting to me was no matter how you would go back in history, art that was found as always tried to express emotions, feeling, sexuality and other concepts we use art to describe today in society. Also, both Changeux and Ramachandran view of the brain relating to stimulation. This is almost true for all art and media, because if you not entertained or interested then, you almost perceived nothing and you begin to tune it out while on the other hand if you are interested and stimulated it begins to spark emotion and feelings and there is sense of wonder and connection.
The text goes over different types of art and what the artists is focusing on when they paint or create sculptures. It also goes over aesthetics again and how the processes and analyze the art the artist creates. The text pretty much just reinforces what we learned in the videos but just adds in more detail. It's amazing to learn how much our brain has an impact on the art we create or like.    For me I most like the concept about the brain and understanding art, this is because the brain is so complex and every little details put into any art piece can change the entire meaning and our perception of it.  What all these videos and articles emphases to me is that art as many ways of being seen and perceived and it is generally copies of copies, which take on a meaning of their own. Art is beauty of all types which can be perceived differently by everyone based on a variety of factors including one's angle of looking at it, personal feeling, lighting, mood, how much it relates to sometime in the real world, etc.

Project #1: Elements and Principles Slideshow Reflection

Doing this assignments was very challenging for me, the only easy part to this assignment was creating my Photobucket account, which was as simple as it get. The assignment on the other hand was hard with its fourteen different concepts of art this was so challenging that I still don't think I completed it very well. Starting off my assignment I first read the pages in the book to gain a better understanding of the elements and principals I was to take pictures of. After which came the first difficult task for which was to find real world inspiration that relate to my topic. Taking pictures was like a day and a half process constantly deleting, re-taking and posting over and over again, after which it was just a matter of trying to accurately put the slideshow together, which was also difficult. This assignment showed me that I struggle with understanding art concepts in my own way. Album http://s1383.photobucket.com/user/alkatek/library/Mobile%20Uploads/Elements%20and%20Princ...

Project #2 Art Gallery Visit #1

The two art pieces that made an impact on me from my visit to the Albright Knox are as followed in this order " The Marvelous Sauce" by Jenhan Geogres Vibert in 1890, done with Oil on wood panel, the second piece was "Tempest in Red" Sandra cinto in 1969, done with acrylic and permanent pen on canvas. The piece it made an impact on me because I found it so funny and full of life, unlike all the other art pieces i found that day this one made me smile as soon as I saw it and looking at these characters made me wonder what is in that sauce. The second piece on the other hand simply garbbed my attention for its visual beauty, its use of lines pull me in and had me lost captivated, reminding me of a very intense sea storm. Art pieces I feel the most connected with are as follows "Carnival of Harlequin" by Joan Miro in 1925, done with Oil on Canvas, and the second piece " Twirling Hands" by James Drake in 1996, done w...
